From the siraman bathing ritual to dinner under the stars: how a Javanese wedding comes together at Amarta Jiwa.

How the Pendopo kitchen builds its rijsttafel, from the sambals ground at dawn to the gudeg that cooks overnight.

Turmeric, rice, sandalwood and jasmine: the story of the bridal ritual at the heart of our spa menu.
Poolside pavilion · Poolside grill & salads11am – 6pm
A thatched pavilion at the end of the infinity pool, serving long lunches in the shade: grilled river prawns and line-caught fish, gado-gado made at the table, fresh coconuts and sorbets of mango, soursop and salak. Towels, loungers and cold-pressed juices are brought to you at the water's edge.
Private dining · Private rijsttafel dinners7pm – 10pm, by reservation
Dinner for two to twelve in a candlelit inner courtyard, or on the terrace of your own suite. The chef sits down with you in the afternoon to plan the menu — a royal rijsttafel, a seafood feast from the south coast, or a vegetarian tasting of Javanese temple food — and a gamelan pair or a solo kecapi player can be arranged for the evening.
Restaurant · Javanese & Indonesian7am – 10:30pm
The resort's heart: an open-sided pavilion under a soaring joglo roof of teak, facing west over the pool to the plain. Breakfast is served to the sound of a gamelan trio, with jamu, tropical fruit, Javanese porridges and eggs from the village. At night the kitchen cooks the food of the Central Javan courts — slow-braised gudeg, coconut-rich opor and sambals ground to order — finishing with a rijsttafel of twelve small dishes served on hand-thrown stoneware.
Bar · Cocktails, jamu & small plates11am – midnight
A long teak terrace on the western rim of the crescent, built for the hour when the sun drops behind the Menoreh Hills and lights the plain gold. The bar works with Javanese spices and the resort's own herb garden: lemongrass and kaffir-lime gin, a turmeric and tamarind sour, arak aged on teak. Small plates come from the Pendopo kitchen.

Four treatment pavilions above the rice terraces, working with the lulur, boreh and jamu recipes of the Javanese courts. Every treatment begins with a frangipani foot bath.
We came for Borobudur and stayed for the mornings. Watching the mist lift off the plain from our terrace, with a pot of Javanese coffee, is the thing I think about most since coming home. The sunrise walk was worth the four o'clock alarm.
Quiet, beautifully built and run with real care. The rijsttafel at the Pendopo was the best meal of our two weeks in Indonesia, and the staff remembered how we took our coffee from the first day.
The lulur ritual at the spa was extraordinary, and the flower bath afterwards overlooking the rice fields felt like a dream. Our suite's pool faced Merapi, and we had breakfast floating in it every morning.

What's here
Amarta Jiwa sits on a limestone shoulder of the Menoreh Hills, where the land falls away to a patchwork of rice terraces, coconut groves and, on the horizon, the grey stupas of Borobudur. Thirty-six domed suites curve around the hillside in a single crescent, each built from hand-cut paras stone and teak, each turned towards the plain so that the first thing you see in the morning is mist lifting off the paddies and the cone of Merapi catching the sun.
The resort is laid out like a Javanese village. At its heart is the Pendopo Agung, an open-sided dining pavilion under a soaring joglo roof, where breakfast comes with gamelan and dinner ends with a rijsttafel of twelve small dishes. Below it, a forty-metre pool of black terrazzo runs out towards the view. The Sukma Spa works with lulur, boreh and jamu recipes from the courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, and the Menoreh Lawn hosts weddings of up to one hundred and eighty guests beneath the hills.
